National Pet Day. Yep, the day of the year where we collectively celebrate the joys of living with a fur ball of love. Think of it as Valentine’s Day for your dog, cat, bird, or whatever else has caught your heart on this day. While our pets do so much for us every day, national pet day encourages us to reciprocate the love and affection collectively.

On this day we are urged to pamper our pets a little more than other days focus on the special relationship with our pets and realize their importance in our lives. Pet Day celebrates the joy that pets bring into peoples’ lives and encourages helping reduce the number of animals in shelters. Helping out orphaned pet companions will improve their health and enhance their opportunities for adoption. Bringing humans and animals together helps make the world a better place.

Facts, You Might Not Know

If you consider your pet a member of the family, you’re not alone: 60 percent of pet owners feel the same way! 66% of Americans have pets, with the ASPCA assessing 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats in the U.S. alone. Fish, gerbils, rabbits, and turtles are a big part of this day too! As per the ASPCA, 7.6 million animals enter shelters in the U.S. consistently each year and 2.7 million animals are euthanized. To get you prepped for the holiday, we’ve thrown together with few facts about pets and pet ownership:

  1. Almost 80 million U.S. family units have a pet, and 42 percent of those families have more than one.
  2. Cats don’t regularly meow at each other – that is a specialized communication tool reserved for their humans.
  3. Forty-five percent of pet proprietors state they occasionally (or much of the time) purchase presents for their creatures.
  4. Parrots, as per the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), are the country’s fourth most well-known pet.
  5. Goldfish have a notoriety for being short-lived animals, yet given appropriate consideration, they can live up to 30 years in captivity.

History of Pet Day

It all started in 2006 with Colleen Page, Animal Welfare Advocate. She decided to celebrate the joy and love that pets bring into our lives. So as a Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert, she wanted to celebrate all pets. This is where it all started. Colleen advocated for the adoption of pets from animal shelters. So to create awareness among the general masses for the animals awaiting homes in shelters, she brainstormed the holiday. As per the ASPCA, roughly 6.5 million animals per annum enter animal shelters.

This number is decreasing over the years but still, there are a significant number of animals who enter and are euthanized in these shelters due to shelter capacity and lack of awareness. The idea behind celebrating this day is to decrease this number, encourage people to adopt than purchase. On this day, people are urged to love their pets, groom them, pamper them, adopt pets, spend more time with them, and volunteer at the local animal shelter.

Why we Love National Pet Day

National Pet Day is all about celebrating the unconditional love that animals give every day without complaining. This day is annually observed in the United States in May and the United Kingdom, it is celebrated in the month of April.
